Drain cleaning device or drain cleaning cable - which is better?

You can often eliminate light drain blockages in the house yourself with a drain cleaning cable. This is fast and inexpensive. Beside the kind of drain cleaning cable also the suitable length is important for the success of drain cleaning. Which crucial advantage drain cleaning devices have thereby opposite pure drain cleaning cables we present to you in the following.

Design and function of a drain cleaning device

A drain cleaning device consists of a magazine in the form of a drum, which takes up the drain cleaning cable in its entire length. From the front end the drain cable protrudes with the drain cleaning tool at its tip and can be pulled out of the magazine by hand. The drain cleaning device also has a drill chuck with which the drain cleaning cable can be clamped. As an alternative to the drill chuck, more simple and cheaper drain cleaning devices are available with knurled screws or wing screws with which the drain cable is fixed. 

A crank is attached to or on the magazine, with the help of which the drain cable is set in rotation with the drum by cranking. Optionally, the magazines have a hexagonal connection which can be used to connect a speed-controlled drill to the drain cleaning device.

Advantage of the drain cleaning device compared to a drain cable

But what exactly is the advantage of the pipe cleaning device over a loose pipe cleaning shaft? Quite crucial is the ideal length of the drain cleaning cable: From the drain cleaning device the drain cable can be pulled out exactly to the necessary length until the blockage. If it is then clamped with the drill chuck or the knurled screw, pressure can be ideally exerted on the drain cable. Because of the magazine the rest of the drain cleaning cable is also not lying around outside the tube on the floor and causes additional dirt or even scratches. Due to the offset of the crank on the magazine, there is sufficient leverage to powerfully drive the drain cleaning cable.

No automatic feed for drain cleaning devices

Please note that drain cleaning devices almost never have a so-called feed: The drain cable is rotated for drilling, any necessary forward pressure is applied by you. The drain cleaning cable does not automatically drill forward in the pipe by your cranking. The drain cleaning device therefore works exactly like your drilling machine: It too only drives the drill, you drill into the wall by pressing the drilling machine. The drain cleaning cable is basically a pure flexible transmission medium, which brings your rotary movement through the pipe forward to the pipe cleaning tool through the crank or drill connection.

Magazine for easy storage of the drain cable

After the removal of the drain blockage a drain cleaning device takes up the drain cable simply and compactly again. Scratches and dirt on the floor are thus avoided in the best possible way. Sufficient ventilation then ensures that the shaft can dry in the drum. This makes storage child's play. This is also an enormous advantage of the tube cleaning device compared to a blank drain cleaning cable, which is often bulky and takes up a lot of space. Final care of the drain cable with rust protection guarantees a long life of the pipe cleaning device. So you are also well prepared for the next blockage.
